THE CITY OF LAS CRUCES...

lies in the shadow of the stunningly beautiful Organ Mountains, a feature which defines our identity. La Placita seeks to impart upon an urban space some of this abundant natural bounty. An outdoor space that is currently barren, located between two existing downtownbuildings, will be transformed into a pavilion-style public plaza, on a small scale, a "placita". This unique setting will accommodate special events, an outdoor café style scene and street vendor activities. La Placita will provide a gateway to and additional space for the twice-weekly Farmers' and Crafts Market. La Placita will create connectivity between two historic neighborhoods, Main Street and the Civic Plaza. The exciting vistas of the Organ Mountains, easily taken in from downtown, will be framed and preserved for the visitor to enjoy.  Perhaps the most essential quality will be the dramatic way La Placita will increase pedestrian accessibility to the heart of downtown. Organ Avenue will be transformed from a vacant corridor to a lively street scene and the "callecita" will once again be open to foot and vehicular traffic.
